What is a Wireless Network Extender?

A wireless network extender is meant to make your wireless network have more than coverage, either for altitude or improved indicate strength. There is a wide variety of extenders on the market place. Often an extender will exist ready up to to share the primary network, and will automatically self-assign a network proper noun (SSID) past calculation "-ext" to the name. In this example, it is SSID "myWiFi-ext". Blink systems recognize an SSID with "-ext" or "-EXT" as identical to the main SSID when y'all are setting them up.

Other extenders tin can be prepare in "repeater" mode that appears identical to the main network.

Older cameras, the Blink XT, and Indoor (gen 1), practice not recognize an SSID with added "-ext".

Why would I need some other system?

Having multiple systems can exist useful in a number of situations.

  • When yous wish to monitor more than one belongings.
  • If you want to have one group of cameras operate on a schedule that is dissimilar from another group of cameras.
  • To prolong camera bombardment life by reducing the physical distance data must be transmitted to attain the network.
  • To monitor an entrance or driveway that is out of range for your main wireless router.
  • To segment the cameras into groups that adjust your needs ameliorate.

Y'all can increase coverage past calculation to an existing system, rather than starting a new 1. Blink Outdoor, Indoor (gen 2), Mini, and XT2 cameras are designed to recognize networks with wireless extenders, while Indoor (gen 1) and XT cameras must connect to the exact same network name (SSID) that the Sync Module is connected to.

Consider the following drawing of two residential program views to sympathize better.

On the left hand side, a habitation Wi-Fi network with an SSID named "myWiFi" has a unmarried wireless router with coverage shown in blue. Seven outdoor and three indoor cameras are part of this organization, for a total of 10 devices associated to one Sync Module. Three devices monitor an outbuilding at the edge of the wireless coverage. This scenario will office properly, merely the batteries of the cameras in the outbuilding might drain faster than those in the home considering they must transmit further to achieve the wireless router. Notice also that the wireless router is placed to reach the outbuilding, but leaving some of the other cameras potentially out of range.

WiFi and system diagram

On the right side of the paradigm, 3 types of networks and systems are shown.

  1. A wireless router is in the main construction with SSID "myWiFi".
  2. A wireless network extender is in the outbuilding with SSID "myWiFi-ext".
  3. A wireless network extender in "repeater" manner is placed at the driveway entrance with SSID "myWiFi" also.

The depression frequency radio (LFR) in a Sync Module has excellent range, but it only sends commands to the photographic camera unit. Blink cameras and other Blink devices send their data to the wireless internet network in add-on to the Sync Module. Ensure that all devices have at least three 'bars' of connectivity when viewed in the Blink App. Note that the Sync Module connectivity icon for bespeak forcefulness does not indicate a photographic camera's connection to Wi-Fi.
